A NUMERICAL STUDY OF TIP INJECTION EXCITATION ON A HIGH SPEED ROTOR WITH INLET DISTORTION

The paper presents a parametric study on a high speed transonic fan rotor with tip injection under inlet distortion employing a high accuracy unsteady numerical simulation solver. Focus is put on the effects of this new form of tip injection on the rotor performance including total pressure ration, efficiency and stability to unveil unsteady flow mechanism for rotor performance improvements by tip injectiion. The results of this investigation demonstrate that benefits of presented tip injection are varied with tip injections parameter, including number of injectors, injection velocity and injection angle, while there are optimum injection parameters which have an improvement not only to the stall margin, but also to the rotor total pressure ratio and efficiency. It reveals that the improvement to rotor total performance is attributed not only to the average incidence increase by the injection at the tip region based on traditional steady flow understanding, but also to the unsteady periodic regular varying of the inlet velocity by the injection. While the passage separation vortex is sensitivity to the inlet velocity unsteady fluctuating frequency, the number of injectors corresponding different frequency of inlet velocity fluctuation relative to the rotor have a distinct impacts on the rotor performance enhancements.
