EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION ON ATOMIZATION IN PULSE DETONATION ENGINES

This paper presents some results dealing with effects of atomizer types on mean droplet size and pulse detonation engine (PDE) performances. The plain-orifice injector and twin-fluid air-assist atomizer are used. A particle size meter based on laser light scattering is employed to measure mean droplet size. The curves of mean droplet size vs fuel flux and fuel/air ratio are obtained. The twin-fluid air-assist atomizer can produce much smaller mean droplet size than plain-orifice injector. The air is injected into the mixing chamber through tangential ports that gives the fuel a high angular velocity, thereby creating smaller droplets. In order to observe the effect of droplet size on pulse detonation engine the proof-of-principle experiments of PDE are carried out. The experimental results indicate that the equivalence ratio lower limits in case of air-assist atomizer are lower than that of plain-orifice injector, while the upper limits of air-assist atomizer higher at lower operation frequency and lower at higher operation frequency. That is the equivalence ratio limits of air-assist atomizer are wider than that of plain-orifice injector. The smaller the droplet size, the lower the optimum equivalence ratio required to stabilize detonation. As the operation frequency increases, the equivalence ratio limit becomes narrow and the difference of optimum equivalence ratio between air-assist atomizer and plain-orifice injector decreases. Droplet size of liquid fuel has a considerable effect on the wave speed. The wave speed increases as the droplet size decreases, which is lower than the gas-phase Chapman-Jouguet detonation velocity.
