Concepts anatomy of disaster prevention and mitigation of Sichuan traditional settlements

In topographically complex mountain areas, various types of disasters in mountainous regions have posed serious threats to local peoples lives and properties. With the aim to draw on and carry forward the rich experience in disaster prevention and mitigation accumulated by our ancestors, this paper conducts a deep analysis and summarization of traditional settlements in Sichuan and reflects on modern concepts of disaster reduction which overemphasize on modern methods without much consideration given to natural laws. Also, it proposes the disaster prevention and reduction concept of show respect for all kinds of natural phenomena including natural disasters; seek the harmonious coexistence between human construction activities and natural environment, and build a local ecologicallybalanced system.
