Functional Dependencies for XML databases
The study of functional dependencies is a basis for the normalization theory in XML databases. An XML database can be viewed as a set that contains a set of atomic values or sets. Therefore, it is a natural generalization of relational database model, which can be viewed as a set of tuples. An unordered tree data model is proposed for an XML database by the approach of generalization, Some features of XML such as ordering, reference relationship, recursivity, duplication and null are ignored in the data model. The XML functional dependency is defined in terms of DTD subtrees. It is a generalization of functional dependencies in relational databases.
