Qualification of engineers in the chemical industry
(0) The qualification of engineers BASF hires in China is excellent when it comes to technical knowledge, good when it comes to social skills, developing when it comes to management skills, and not yet developed when it comes to challenging concepts and being independent-minded. The article goes along the lines of what engineers do in BASF, and what general qualifications are being expected. In order to show the areas of improvement for the qualification of Chinese engineers and example shows the principle of how to get to optimized and value-adding plant concepts by putting together multi-discipline teams with different aspects and expectations on plant design. The inherent conflict of interest is being challenged by an outsider to create new ideas and concepts to get to most economical plant designs. This kind of process is not part of the Chinese engineering education today but essential for a company like BASF in an international, competitive environment.
