Entrepreneurship and sustainability perspective in engineering education
The globalization in all aspects, changing the market share of the economy and the distribution of the manufacturing, creates a new challenge for education in science and engineering. A responsible solution to the challenge is to enhance the education in collaboration with the industry with the considerations of international and sustainable perspectives. This paper presents how a Swedish university, for example, Malardalen University, has established the strategic development based on such background. At the Malardalen University, the faculty of Science and Engineering has introduced five key elements in all engineering programs, including entrepreneurship, sustainability perspective, personal development, scientific methodology and internationalization. By doing this, a new approach is applied so that innovative multiple alternatives with cross disciplinary collaborations are encouraged instead of traditional teaching, which is the status of today in different areas. To maintain a scientific mind and organised way of acting, the importance of scientific methodology has been highlighted, which may otherwise be lost iftoo much entrepreneurship. As the survival of humanity is greatly depending on technology development, the sustainability perspective has been implemented for all different processes of teaching and research at the university. To improve the personal competence, mentors have been specially facilitated to offer advices for students on techniques such as writing and presenting a scientific paper, working in a team. Multiple culture education and international exchange of students have also been included for the internationalization.
