Using contemporary teaching strategies to improve teaching and learning in transport processes and unit operations

This paper describes how to apply contemporary teaching theories and modern teaching methods into the course Transport Processes and Unit Operations. Authors reflect the common teaching styles and promote to take student- centered teaching and learning approaches rather than teacher-centered. Teaching strategies is modified in terms of course objectives and the need of society. By studying the learning characteristics of students, concept mapping, case study, problem-base learning (PBL), multimedia technology, online learning environments etc new teaching skills are applied to currently employ teaching practice. The aim is to stimulate student interest and motivate students to be responsible for their own learning. The application of multiple teaching strategies can foster generic attributes of student such as self-learning, critical thinking,cooperation and communication skills, how to solve real-world problems and lifelong learning skills. The article also discusses how to use formative rather than summative assessment to estimate the performance of student. By taking all these measures to different students, teaching of teachers and learning of students are improved greatly.
