New teaching model for improving creative design ability for undergraduate students
In the past, almost all the universities in China have taken the gearbox-design as the topic to educate students for elevating mechanical design level. Gearbox is a very good practical design project needing to use many design skills. Since such education process is usually done with a detailed guide-book which tell the students almost every step of the designing, it helps students to grasp a basic design skill but can hardly develop the students creative design ability. Through long time investigation, the authors have put forward and carried out a quite new strategy for training the students in mechanical design course, in the new teaching process a creative design practice is introduced into the course teaching without extra time. Through 9 years application, it has been demonstrated that the new teaching model not only enhance the creative design ability but also develop the students interest for creation. Students have designed some very useful products,won innovation competition prizes and got domestic patents.
