A STRUCTURE CELL DESIGN AND ITS APPLICATION TO ADAPTIVE STRUCTURES

A structure cell design is presented in this paper to meet the needs of providing large deformation and small stiffness in the longitudinal plane and carrying and transferring loads for adaptive structures. The structure cell can provide greater longitudinal flexibility and be stiffer on the other directions. Composing flexible structure with these cells can provide large deformation in plane and have the ability of bear loads out of plane. A hingeless contoured trailing edge flap is designed by means of this flexible structure, which overcomes the present shortcomings of smart materials in actuation force and deformation rate for large scale structures. The calculation indicates that the stretch deformation of the cell in the longitudinal plane is far larger than that in the other directions and the deformation rate and the ability of load carrying of the hingeless contoured trailing edge flap satisfy the static strength requirements for full scale aircraft.
