Experimental study on giant magnetostrictive material for mini-actuator design
The behavior ofa magnetostrictive actuator is mainly determined by the magneto-mechanical performance of the driving element, which is the giant magnetosrictive material(GMM), Terfenol-D rod, employed in the current design. The characteristics of this rod are greatly dependent on the specific operating conditions such as the prestress, the magnetic excitation. Therefore, in this paper it presents the investigation through experiments into the range of prestress and magnetic excitation to be exerted on the rod for optimally designing the named low, moderate and high field actuators, respectively. Moreover, some complementary insights on the parameters to be used in transducer design and modeling may also be deduced from the experiment.
