EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF THE STRUCTURE HEALTH MONITORING BASED ON PIEZOELECTRIC IMPEDANCE TECHNOLOGY
This paper presents an experimental study on the application of piezoelectric lead-zirconate-titanate(PZT)-based active sensing techniques for nondestructive evaluation(NDE) of civil structure. Based on the theory of the electromechanical coupling property and the interaction between piezoelectric elements and structures, the basic principle of piezoelectric impedance technology for structure health monitoring is put forward. Using steel plate with crack and bolt-jointed aluminum plate as examples, the change of impedance signatures are examined by PZT transducers. Experimental results show that the variation of the piezoelectric impedance of PZT patches which are near the crack is much larger than that far away from the crack; The increase of the size of the man-made crack obviously enlarges the variation of impedance detected; Bolts loosening has much more influence on the impedance of PZT patches nearby than those far away.
