English Literature and TEFL
Since Chinese students learn English in a mother-tongue and mother-culture enviroment, inadequate input of authentic English has been a haunting issue for both learners and teachers. In contrast to the insufficient number of English newspapers, periodicals and audio-visual programs available, literary works have remained a reliable and appealing repertoire where they can draw effective language and exotic culture. This paper discusses the significant role of literaryworks in TEFL from three aspects: (1) application of literary works as language resource; (2) regard for literary works as cultural resource; (3) interpretation of literary works to upgrade taste. The three aspects should be integrated in language class. In the process of reading literary works, students can reinforce grammatical rules, build up vocabulary, increase cultural awareness, and form sensitive perceptions about literature. A specific literary work, Horseman in the Sky, is analyzed to describe how to apply English literature to TEFL classroom.
