The Role of Chinese Linguaculture in ELT in China
English teaching in China has long been tangled with both the fact of and the fear for language transfer with L1 and C1 being shied away by the strong urge for the input of target language and culture. While increasing emphasis has been placed on the learning and teaching of target culture in the ELT profession around the world, the author of this paper wishes to claim the attention of ELT researchers and practitioners to the important role that Chinese linguaculture plays in ELT in China. It will be argued that learners competence in Chinese linguaculture,esp. their ability to express their Chinese cultural identity in English, constitutes a significant part of their intercultural communicative competence. And at the same time, the development of learners competence in Chinese linguaculture will function as a great impetus for ELT and ELL in China. The author strongly believes that integrating Chinese linguaculture into ELT programs in China will render more relevance to Chinese learners English learning and gratify their desires as well as the needs to express their Chinese identity in English in the global community. Moreover, the Chinese linguacultural elements in the ELT curriculum will activate learners past experience and knowledge, which will in turn shed new light on their understanding of how English functions as a language system and thus greatly enhance the general learning and teaching of English in China.Though the resources of L1 and C1 may go well beyond the realization of most English learners and teachers, there is no doubt much to expect in incorporating Chinese linguaculture into the ELT programs throughout the country.
