Cultural Motivation for Topic-Comment Sentence Structure in the Chinese Language

In this thesis, the correlation between cultural phenomenon and syntactic structures is studied and justified. Firstly, grammatical differences are obtained from close examination of more than three thousand sentences. It is proved that the structure of topic-comment is more prevalent and deep-rooted in the Chinese language, while the structure of subject-predicate is basic in the English language.Based on this grammatical phenomenon, three pieces of syntactical distinctions concerning subject and predicate are contrasted between the two languages and integrated with the aspect of culture-philosophical thinking-in order to make grammar more deeply and exactly understood. The thesis studies the reflection of Confucianism and Taoism on Chinese syntactical features and the exhibition of great Western philosophers theories on English syntactical structures.
