Data-Driven Learning: Applications and Implications

In the past two decades, with the development of corpus linguistics, data-driven learning (DDL), an approach to using corpus data for language learning and teaching, has begun to arouse increasing interest of EFL teachers. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive review of existing research on DDL, with a focus on its application in EFL classrooms. It is found that most previous studies primarily concentrate on proposing various methods of using concordance results for instruction, without investigating the actual effectiveness of DDL for language learning and teaching. The author of this paper argues that research on DDL is still in its experimental stage, and more studies need to be undertaken to verify the possibility, feasibility, and effectiveness of its application into language classrooms. Pedagogical implications of adopting DDL and scope for future research are proposed.
