A Proposed Approach for the Improvement of English Listening
This study is premised on the fact that listening is of primary importance in language acquisition. It aims to find out the most common listening comprehension problems and causes of difficulties involved in English listening among the English major students in Shanghai Industrial & Commercial Foreign Languages College. The conclusions of the study are: (1) Students have problems in listening skills, likes, like identifying sounds and sound patterns, identifying the communicative value of sentences and utterances, drawing accurate inferences, noting details and identifying main points of information. Students problems in listening comprehension skills indicate the need for more attention to list4ening instruction in this area; (2) The absent sound and sound pattern categories in the native language make it difficult for Mandarin-speaking learners to hear and pronounce English words with these sounds, and would therefore constitute one of the major and serious problems; (3) Students vocabulary level definitely affects their listening ability. Students listening vocabulary is smaller than that of reading vocabulary.Based on the findings and conclusion of this study, some strategies are recommended, particularly using the Interactive Learning Model in teaching English listening. An action program and sample lesson plans are also designed to ensure the effectiveness of teaching listening skills to the English majors in the Universities and Colleges in China.
