Metallogenic system and its application to mineral exploration

Metallogenic system research is one of the most important methods to better understand ore-forming regularities and to guide mineral exploration. Metallogenic system is a natural system with ore-forming functions, which includes all geological factors and ore-forming dynamic processes that control the mechanism of ore formation and ore preservation in a certain spatial and temporal interval, and all mineral deposits series and anomaly series. The idea contains four essentials, i.e. (1) classification of metallogenic systems by tectonic setting; (2) multi-factor coupling and critical transformation ore-forming mechanics; (3) metallogenic network composed of mineral deposit series and mineralized anomaly series; and (4) the integrated process of ore formation-modification-preservation of mineral deposits. In this paper, taking the metallogenic belt of middle-lower reaches of Yangtze River as an example, the author analyses the features of its metallogenic system. In discussion of the application of metallogenic system to mineral exploration, the author emphasizes the studying of (1) completeness of metallogenic system development, (2) the depth of metallogenic system development, (3) 3-D structure of metallogenic system network and the zonation of mineral deposits.
