Rare earth elements in modern and ancient hydrothermal sulphide minerals

The rare earth elements (REE) of various sulphides from modem hydrothermal fields of Mid-Atlantic Ridge have been examined, and related to their fluid composition. All sulphides demonstrate depletion of light REE (LREE) and strong negative Eu-anomaly when normalized to REE composition in hydrothermal fluid. Heavy REE (HREE) substitution into sulphide appears to be influenced with crystallographic control of sulphide lattice, while LREE content is governed with chloride complexation processes in fluid solution. REE patterns of hydrothermal sulphides have been compared to the REE in sulphide samples from the Uzelginsk ore deposit. REE distributions in ancient sulphides prove the hydrothermal origin of sulphide samples as well as reflect the alteration processes that took place during post-hydrothermal stages of ore genesis.
