ERPen: A DSP based portable device for offline OCR and bi-linguistic translation
With the progresses of the technologies in the fields of Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and high performance of Microprogrammed Control Unit (MCU), OCR systems and portable digital assistants have become popular in daily life. The embedded systems based on online character recognition have been developed in a large scale. However, the integrated system using offline character recognition is still in research and little commercial products are in sale in China. In recent work, we have designed and implemented a portable off-line OCR and bi-linguistic translation system (Chinese to English, English to Chinese)--Electronic Reading Pen (ERPen), embedded in DSP. The constitution of hardware and software of the system are described in this paper and the implementation of the several key algorithms is discussed in details.
