A NEW METHOD OF PURIFYING LIQUID HELIUM IN SPACE USING METAL MESH-WIRE FILTER
This paper introduces a new method of purifying liquid helium in AMS (Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer) using the metal mesh-wire filter, which has small pores with diameters up to μm degree and advantage of low energy cost, high filtration efficiency and preferred strength under absolutely low temperature. When impure mixture of liquid helium and solid nitrogen flowed through the filter, particles with diameters not smaller than the pore size of filter deposited on filter surface and formed a cake, while purified helium penetrated through the filter. Components in the downstream of the filter were analyzed. It can be found from the experimental results that after filtration, the purity of liquid helium is higher than 99.999% which can meet the demands of AMS. Effects of several parameters on the performance of filter were examined and a computer model was developed. In the end, needs for further developments were discussed.
