DYNAMICS OF TANK PRESSURE DURING STORAGE OF CRYOGENIC LIQUIDS

Besides Net Evaporation Rate (NER) also Holding Time (HT) of tanks for storage of cryogenic liquids is becoming subject of investors’ interest as a proof of quality of cryogenic insulation. Vent free storage is a priority of tank operators. This issue has to be considered with respect to operating conditions. Both NER and HT were measured at various sizes of vacuum insulated tanks with liquid nitrogen, at various liquid levels and for both the vacuum-perlite and vacuum-multi-layer insulation. Mathematical model, which allows forecast of both the parameters and especially forecast of HT from NER was developed. Results were aligned with experimental data.Specific parameters and other aspects of tank operation and their influence on the tank pressure dynamics are discussed.Another aspect of long time storage is a possibility of the roll-over effect, which means generation of excess vapor as result of spontaneous mixing of layers of different temperature or different composition, observed typically at flat bottom tanks. Based on thermal calculation it is reasoned, that there is no roll-over danger at thermally insulated pressure vessels.
