NUMERICAL ANALYSIS FOR EFFECT OF THERMAL INSULATION THICKNESS ON THE PERFORMANCE AND THERMAL FLUID CHARACTERISTICS OF A DOMESTIC REFRIGERATOR/FREEZER

This paper focuses on the thermal fluid characteristics of a domestic refrigerator/freezer numerically, and also explores the effect of thermal insulation thickness on efficiency potential. The commercial CFD software STAR-CD is employed to solve the governing equations of the flow for the RF model, which includes the freezer compartment, fresh food compartment, baffles, and flow passages. The fluid domain was solved for the temperature, pressure and velocity distributions conjugated with the solid domain. The boundary conditions of this study were obtained from the actual measurements under the normal operation of the RF. From the results, the qualitative performance of the compartment was described graphically with temperature and velocity distributions. The thermal load of the studied model is reduced by 10.4% with a 20% increment of the thermal insulation thickness.
