STABILITY ANALYSIS OF PARAFFIN OIL-IN-WATER EMULSIONAS PHASE CHANGE SLURRY
In this paper, three commercial paraffin waxes RT6, RT10 and RT20 (Rubitherm Technologies GmbH, Germany) were chosen to make a paraffin oil-in-water emulsion as Phase Change Slurry (PCS) for thermal storage application. The studied PCS has got a high heat storage capacity due to the latent heat capacity of paraffin during its phase change process. The stability of paraffin/water emulsion is the main concern when it is used as thermal transfer fluid, because emulsion is a binary system composed of a dispersed phase and a continuous phase. RT6, RT10 and RT20 emulsions have been made and examined for the stability. The stability analysis was based on kinetic, thermodynamical and mechanical aspects. The results showed that the produced emulsions changed its properties barely, not only during storage but also after a certain thermal cycles. 15L emulsion with 30 weight percent RT20 was circulated by a pump in a pilot plant through heat exchangers. It remained in dispersion after about 350 thermal cycles and kept its heat storage capacity. The press drop of this emulsion was about 1.2 – 1.8 times of water in dependence on the temperature.
