PERFORMANCE SIMULATION OF GAS COOLER FOR CO2 HEAT PUMP SYSTEM USING TWO STAGE COMPRESSOR

Due to the environmental problems caused by global warming, many studies are currently on-going to develop heat pump system using carbon dioxide, a natural refrigerant. The critical temperature of carbon dioxide is lower than ambient air temperature. Thus, hot gas refrigerant is cooled as single phase gas cooling process. The outlet temperature of gas cooler has a great effect on the efficiency of carbon dioxide heat pump system. In order to obtain high efficiency, larger heat transfer area of gas cooler is demanded. Another promising method to enhance system efficiency is adoption of two stage compressor, which requires an air-cooled intercooler heat exchanger to cool the hot gas from first stage compression process. Owing to limited frontal area of heat exchanger and cost, as intercooler grows larger, the heat transfer area of gas cooler becomes smaller. Thus the optimum distribution of heat exchanger between gas cooler and intercooler considering maximum system performance. This study suggested various performance simulation results for a given design of gas cooler.
