STUDIES ON CO-GENERATION OF COLD AND POWER USING NEW WORKING FLUID PAIRS

In order to improve the overall energy conversion efficiency of the Vapour Absorption Refrigeration System (VARS), the high pressure refrigerant vapour from the generator may be expanded in an Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) by introducing a turbine between the generator and condenser to produce mechanical energy. In this paper, a comparative study of the ORC-VARS hybrid system is made using new refrigerants, namely; HCFC124, HFC134a and HFC32 with Di- Methyl Acetamide (DMAC) as absorbent. HCFC124-DMAC pair is suitable for low generator pressure applications while HFC32-DMAC is preferable for high generator pressure applications. Systems using HFC134a or HCFC124 as refrigerants are suggested for low temperature refrigeration applications. HFC32-DMAC pair is suitable for cooling at higher evaporator temperatures. HFC32 gives the highest cold-to-power ratio whereas HCFC124 yields the lowest.
