HEAT EXCHANGER DEVELOPMENT FOR COMPACT WATER/LIBR ABSORPTION SYSTEMS

Compact sorption appliances using the working pair water / lithium bromide are a promising option for energy efficient tri-generation, solar cooling or residential heating. Yet, due to economic and operational reasons, standard plant technology established in the field of large capacity chillers and heat pumps cannot be straightforward adapted to compact units. Thus, for a successful marketing of compact sorption units, major effort is required to achieve tolerable plant dimensions and weight together with affordable first cost and reliable operation. In a research project, the design of the key components, i.e. the main heat exchangers evaporator, absorber, condenser and generator, has been revised with respect to compactness and manufacturing cost. In order to achieve uncomplicated standardized manufacturing and improved vacuum tightness, concepts and designs for compact heat exchanger modules derived from standard finned heat exchangers or plate heat exchangers have been developed. They differ significantly from the thermo-hydraulic design of large-capacity chillers with conventional tube-and-shell configuration.Concepts for the dimensioning of these compact heat exchanger units in compliance with the required thermo-hydraulic conditions, i.e. wetting of the heat exchanger surface and elimination of pressure drop in the refrigerant vapor flow, are presented. Experimental results for the heat transfer per heat exchanger surface area as well as for the heat transfer per volume achieved during falling film absorption with compact finned heat exchangers and plate heat exchangers are presented.
