PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS OF PLATE HEAT EXCHANGERS USED AS REFRIGERANT EVAPORATORS
This paper considers the performance of plate heat exchangers used as refrigerant evaporators. A literature review of the status of research shows that while chevron-plate heat exchangers have increasingly been applied in the last two decades as evaporators and condensers in liquid chillers and other refrigeration systems world-wide, the fundamental modelling of their operational characteristics is not conclusively understood. A limited amount of heat transfer and pressure drop data is available for a few refrigerants and even more limited information has been published from real, large-scale installations. In the present study, flow boiling characteristics in the corrugated channel are discussed. Measurement data and assessments are presented from large-scale water-chilling machines, where plate heat exchangers are employed as flooded evaporators. Comparison between measured refrigerant-side heat transfer coefficients with those predicted by some published correlations is given and comments are made on the applicability of the respective correlations.
