SIMPLIFIED MODELS FOR INTER-TUBE ABSORPTION IN HORIZONTAL –TUBE - BUNDLE ABSORBERS

Simplified models are developed for the prediction of inter-tube absorption using the concept of an effective mass transfer coefficient. These semi-empirical models require as input the variation with time of the size of forming drops and jets which are determined in an experimental set-up without vapour absorption. The drop / jet areas and volumes obtained from the recorded images are incorporated in the simplified heat and mass transfer models for drop formation, drop free fall and steady jet flow. The pertinent heat and mass transfer coefficients are obtained from those available in the literature. Computations are performed over a range of absorber tube gaps and solution flow rates. For typical design and operating conditions, the models predict the contribution of inter-tube absorption to be between 30 to 36 percent of the total vapour absorption. The predictions depend markedly on the values of the heat and mass transfer coefficients used in the models.
