ON MODELING OF SCREW COMPRESSORS

This paper presents the development and validation of a lumped-parameter physics-based model for a family of R134a twin-screw compressors. In predicting volumetric efficiency, the model considers motor cooling effect, e.g. refrigerant suction pressure drop and temperature rise, leakage through various clearance gaps, and discharge pressure drop. The model also includes various power losses in predicting overall isentropic efficiency, such as compression inefficiency, leakage loss, rotor tip drag loss, bearing friction, and motor loss. The model is validated using the performance data of existing small and medium size compressors. Good scaling capability was achieved by using only one set of empirical coefficients for the whole family of compressors. The validation results are presented in this paper. This compressor model is used for predicting performance of future larger size screw compressors within the same compressor family.
