THE EFFECT OF REFRIGERANT CIRCUITRY ON THE PERFORMANCE OF AIR-COOLED FINNED-TUBE CONDENSERS

Refrigerant circuitry is very crucial for refrigerant flow distribution and heat transfer, so it has significant influence on the performance of heat exchangers but has not been sufficiently studied yet. In the present study, the effect of refrigerant circuitry was studied in a combination of experimental test and simulation. Six typical air-cooled finned-tube condensers of different refrigerant circuitries were studied including single circuit and double circuits. A mathematical model was developed for finned-tube heat exchangers, which took the complex refrigerant circuitry into account. The model was verified against the experimental data. The results indicate that for the optimum circuitry arrangement, the merging and split point locations should accommodate the variations of the refrigerant heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop during phase change, and the tube numbers in frontal and back rows should be uniform for different circuits.
