EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION ON BOILING HEAT TRANSFER CHARACTERISTICS OF WATER SPRAY IMPINGING

Water spray impinging evaporation can reach a very high heat transfer coefficient, and therefore has attracted interesting of researchers for long time. However, most of the experiments were focused on the spray cooling, that is, spray evaporation on a high temperature surface. The spay evaporation on a surface with relatively low superheating temperature is a new technology which could be applied to sea water desalination, refrigeration and air-conditioning systems and needs to be further studied. The present experiments were focused on the evaporation characteristics of spray impingement. The experiments were conducted for the spray evaporation on an electrically heated surface of stainless steel under small spray mass flux and low superheating temperatures. The test sheet is a stainless steel sheet of 150mm in length, 11mm in width and 0.05mm in thickness. The effects of heat flux, mass flow rate, spray distance and spray direction on spray evaporation heat transfer performance were investigated. The measurements were also extended to the non-boiling region, of which the surface temperature is lower than the saturation temperature. At atmosphere, the degree of superheat is about 10℃. The experiments showed that the spray evaporation heat transfer coefficient could be double as much as that of pool boiling heat transfer. It is expected that the spray impinging evaporation technique can be used in the evaporators of refrigeration and air-conditioning systems.
