MOVE TO HFC 410A IN REFRIGERATION APPLICATIONS
As they are more environmental friendly,compare to HCFCs and HFCs, natural refrigerants are trying to be developped in refrigeration plants.But CO2, HCs and NH3 have limitations due to some of their characteristics ,respectively, working pressure , flammability and toxicity. In countries like Europe, where HCFCs are banned in new plants, HFCs are widely used in small and medium refrigeration plants(food industries and retail sectors) .They have zero ODP, are energy-efficient enough from -40℃ to 0℃ and plant investment, as well as running costs are competitive . However,their GWP are hight but todays, refrigerant charges and containment are improved..In refrigeration applications, food production, storage, distribution, retail, HFC R 404A is mainly used for high temperature (-10 to – 15℃) and low temperature (-30℃ to – 40℃).HFC R134a, is used today’s in car’s air conditionning ( but will be restricted by 2011) and in large and medium water chillers, meanwhile R 410A in small AC packages, and coming since two years in small and medium water chillers, replacing R 407C and R 404A.This paper considers the interest to replace R 404A by R 410A in refrigeration fields , in terms of direct and indirect greenhouse impacts, today’s possibilities , investment and running costs.
