SIMULATION OF PRESSURE DROP AND OPTIMIZATION OF PIPE SIZES IN A REFRIGERATING SYSTEM WITH AMMONIA REFRIGERANT

Mathematical models for pressure drops through both the suction pipe to compressor and the wet return pipe from evaporator in an Ammonia Pump Feeding Refrigeration System were developed. The performance of the system was simulated using a computer program which was developed based on the two pressure drop models and the thermal parameters models of the ammonia refrigerant. An ice making refrigeration loop with the cooling capacity of 100 kW, a 102-meter-long suction pipe and a 152-meter-long wet return pipe, was taken as a target studied. The simulation results show that, compared to the traditional pipe selecting method, the pipe size optimization can increase COP of the system by 7.6%, contributing to electricity saving of 9092 kWh each year. The economic analysis shows the payback period of the additional cost caused by the optimized pipes in the example is less than 2 years. The life period of the refrigerating compressor used in the system can be extended because of the decrease of the discharge temperature after pipe size optimization.
