ASSESSMENT OF HUMIDIFICATION USING PRESSURIZED WATER ATOMIZERS FOR ULO STORAGE OF CONFERENCE PEARS

Recently, there has been an interest in active humidity control of conference pear storage rooms to prevent excessive moisture loss from fruits. Humidification systems must be able operational in ultra low oxygen (ULO) and provide high relative humidity at sub-zero temperatures, without causing excessive water deposits on the product. The droplet diameter distribution of high pressure nozzles at different pressures was measured. The droplet diameter ranged from 9 to 80 μm, with median values of 20 and 22 μm for 80 and 40 bar, respectively. During experiments, the refrigerant and room air temperature, the air humidity and the amount of water deposited at different positions in the room was monitored as a function of time for single pulse as well as interval humidification. The effects of nozzle characteristics and the cooling system status at humidification (system on, defrosting and system off) were analysed. In the single pulse experiments, the humidity level was different for different combinations of factors. A CFD model based on an Eulerian-Lagrangian multiphase flow model was developed to simulate and explain the observed behaviour. There was a good agreement between measured and predicted results.
