INVESTIGATION ON AIR INFILTRATION THROUGH OPENINGS OF BLASTING QUICK-FREEZERS

Air infiltration through entrance and exit openings of continuous quick-freezers obviously has negative influences on energy consumption, performance of the processing equipment, manufacturing environment, and quality of frozen foods. In order to explore the fundamental principles and hence to instruct practical designs, a mathematical mechanism model verified by its conformity to experimental results was established to describe the nature of air infiltration phenomena of quick-freezers. The results showed that air infiltration through openings of quick-freezers is influenced by temperature difference, internal airflow pattern, sizes of the openings, as well as the relative position of openings, etc.Based on the investigation, the improving approach, airflow blockage technology –by applying the rectangular blockage tunnel to the higher opening, which was proved to be simple, economic and effective, was supposed and applied to minimize the amount of air infiltration for the studied freezing equipment. The results showed that the applied technology made the infiltration velocities and temperatures, and the total heat load of the equipment to the expected level of making the tempering of the freezing air much slower by decreasing the heat load of the air infiltration through the openings to 18~20% of the original design.
