CAPACITY CONTROL OF LIQUID-COOLED AIR-COOLERS
Liquid-cooled air-coolers for air-conditioning, refrigeration etc. rarely use their design capacity. Traditionally, on-off operation or control valves provide the required capacity control, resulting in excessive pressure drop and drive power due to high flows and the need for balance and control valves. However, using direct pump speed control may achieve better control at a lower cost while using substantially less drive energy. Basic analysis of heat transfer and control methods provide an analytic tool to study how coil-design affects the transfer function of an air-coil on capacity turndown.
