ENERGY CONSERVATION ON 1 TR SPLIT AIR CONDITIONER USING EVAPORATIVE COOLING

The paper presents design and development of an energy efficient 1 TR split air conditioner based on evaporative cooling. The evaporative cooling is the most desirable method to design an energy efficient unit since the heat transfer involves water as coolant. However, very few researchers have applied this technique for small capacity units. The objective of the present work is to improve COP of the unit by operating it at lower condensing temperature which helps in reduction of compressor power. The rotary compressor selected for this work consumes 1.25 kW as per manufacturer’s specifications for a standard one TR split air conditioner unit, giving a COP of 2.8. With this compressor and one TR air conditioner, using evaporative cooling the COP has been experimentally evaluated to be 4.11. The present paper highlights details of this work. it gives in detail, the design of condenser coil, cooling tower and capillary tube made specifically for this purpose. It also compares the experimental results with the predictions based on the design model developed for this purpose. The study is further extended to evaluate the effect of various design parameters on the performance of the cooler.
