EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION OF ROOM AIR STRATIFICATION IN AN UNDERFLOOR AIR DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM

Physical tests were utilized to investigate air stratification in an UFAD room. The test chamber, 3.9m (L) ×2.9m (W) × 2.6m (H), was served by an air-conditioning and mechanical ventilation system which was capable of controlling the air temperature and airflow rate at the supply diffuser. The different supply air conditions and space heat loads approximated those found in building applications were tested. The results show that the parameter affecting room air stratification would be expressed by the length scale of the floor supply jet. When the length scale was smaller than the room height and increased from 0.83 m to 1.15 m, the ratio of vertical temperature difference at the free area to the difference between return and supply air temperature decreased from 0.59 to 0.47.
