THE TESTING OF AN ROTARY COMPRESSOR HEAT PUMP WITH INTEGRATED EXPANSION TURBINE

A novel rotary compressor with integrated expansion turbine has been developed for use in higher temperature heat pump applications. Extensive modelling revealed that the compressor/turbine combination would reveal higher coefficients of performance (COPs) and higher capacities when operating across temperature lifts typical of a retrofit heat pump heating a standard UK wet-radiator system. There then followed an extensive period of testing through which the performance of the system evolved as did the understanding of the dynamic processes associated with a turbine and compressor operating in unison on the same shaft. Initial results were encouraging with high COPs being achieved. However internal leakage between turbine and compressor impinged on performance and therefore the system was remodelled to dramatically reduce this effect.
