SLUDGE DRYING IN A GREENHOUSE ASSISTED BY A HEAT PUMP
Sludge management is an ever-increasing problem due to environmental pollution and energy consumption. This paper presents the study of the wastewater-sludge drying using heat provided by solar energy and complemented by a heat pump. Several heat pump designs have been tested in order to analyze advantages and drawbacks of heating by the floor (heat conduction), or by the above (convection by air) or by both. Moreover, energy can be recovered from hot and humid air sweeping the greenhouse and/or from water coming out of the wastewater treatment plant. The annual drying rate scheme is highly increased by the use of a heat pump when compared to the solar drying rate. The annual quantity of sludge that can be dried is largely enhanced while energy consumption is maintained lower than conventional drying systems, by a factor of 4.
