HSPF CALCULATION OF AN ECONOMIZER TWO-STAGE COMPRESSION SYSTEM ALLOWING SWITCHING TO ONE-STAGE COMPRESSION SYSTEM

In France, 62% of heating installations in existing residential buildings are hydronic systems. It is often the case that a high supply temperature of about 65℃ is required during the coldest days in order to ensure comfort. For this a two-stage compression heat pump is an adequate way in which high temperature can be reached by low outdoor air temperature. Nevertheless, when the weather becomes warmer, a single-stage compression system is more efficient than a two-stage system. Thus, to optimize the HSPF (heating seasonal performance factor), a system allowing switching from a single-stage compression system to a two-stage one has been studied. The study aims at evaluating the gain of switching from a single-stage to a two-stage compression system and to calculate a HSPF in accordance with the house type and the heat network. The input power and the heating capacity of the heat pump have been expressed in relation to the outdoor air temperature and the inlet water temperature of the condenser in single-stage and in two-stage modes. The system includes the house, the radiators, and the hydronic circuit. Models depicting each component of the heating system have been coded in a numerical tool to simulate the behavior of the system in a quasi-static state, and then to evaluate the COP for the heating season.
