SIMULATION OF COOLING PERFORMANCE OF VERTICAL U-TUBE GEOTHERMAL HEAT PUMP
Temperature field of the soil around ground loop heat exchangers is critical to the design, performance and energy analysis of geothermal heat pump systems. For the simulation of transient heat transfer in vertical U-tube ground loop heat exchangers, a numerical model using finite volume formation and borehole thermal resistance was developed. The results show that the temperature of fluid inside U-tube pipe and soil around heat exchangers strongly depends on the dissipating heat rate per unit length of borehole. The effect of thermal conductivity of surrounding soil and the grout on the performance of vertical ground heat pump system was also analyzed. In order to take full advantage of geothermal heat pumps, the length of U-tube pipe should be determined reasonably for a prescribed condition.
