Optimal Batch Size Determination in Kanban Controlled Production Line
The small batch size production plays an important role in lean manufacturing. Small batch size eases production schedule, smoothes the materials flow, reduces work-in-process inventory and materials handling cost. Unfortunately, not every production line could be arranged in its optimal small batch because the unbalanced processes cycle time in each station and a variety of factors. This research focuses on determining the optimal batch size for a production line controlled in kanban principle. An operational inventory model is built for minimizing the total cost in the condition that takt time and cycle time are given. Numerical example is presented to illustrate the problem of determining the optimal batch size using kanban to control the information flow and material flow.
