Product Line Selection and Flexible Contracting for Demand Uncertainty
This study concerns a series of manufacturers decisions when facing a high demand uncertainty. From the beginning, product line selection problem is revisited through a new persistence model, and we compared its results and performance with the classic Multinomial Logit model. The prominent advantage of new model embedded with persistence model is its nice address of Independence of Irrelevant Alternatives (I.I.A) properties, which is a major drawback of previous logit model. After we use the new product line selection model to identify the potential set of products to launch, next focus of this study is the contracting with the retailers which should encompass volume and product flexibility. Recent literature has well recognized the value of such flexibility in the manufacturers flexible/dedicated capacity investment decisions, however in the contract literature, the integration of various production flexibility within the contracts hasnt been fully explored. We believe that the flexibility capacity strategies must require the support and coordination from corresponding contract terms between the involved supply chain participants. We design the corresponding contract policies, develop suitable models, examine their implications, compare with benchmarks and propose optimal contract types under different situations.
