Option Requirements Planning for Mass Customized Products
The focus of this paper is on determining the requirements of different component options used to manufacture a mass customized end product. We explicitly model two distinct sources of option requirements uncertainty: stochastic end-product demand and uncertain market proportion demand for each option. An analysis of a stylized two component and two option model helps to structurally characterize the optimal cost minimizing requirements policies for all options in order to meet desired end product fill rates. The model is extended to address the issue of component commonality.
