Experiences of the Silk Community with the Silk-2 Project

In this paper, we describe the choices made in the Silk-2 network, to provide a VSAT based system for the Caucasus and Central Asia. We show that for this size of network, it is worth having significantly more powerful earth-station nodes, with compression and better modulation, even though these are considerably more expensive than simpler ones. We provide optimisation results which show that, for the 120/30 Mbps system with nine earth nodes, the configuration chosen is die most cost-effective. There is an intention to supplement this international network with additional nodes for national connectivity; here we show that for such an application, the trade-off between cost and functionality is significantly different. Finally we describe some of the other aspects of the Silk/OCCASION projects in providing additional services.
