REANALYSIS OF LIFE CYCLE COSTS IN MANAGEMENT OF STEEL RAIWAY BRIDGES
The paper presents review on historical development of maintenance and management of steel bridges in Japanese railways from the point of view of contemporary asset management. Since railway development has over 100 years of history, railway maintenance has been accumulating technical experience, which is longer than the ordinary life cycle of steel bridges, i.e., 60 years. At the first part of the paper, development of technology is summarized in terms of: ① single structure management with life cycle cost consideration; ② stock management where total maintenance cost and stock condition is considered; and ③ asset management where external effect of maintenance is considered. Then, a method of LCC analysis with replacement is derived for evaluation of repair to extend remaining life and routine maintenance. The method is applied to past decisions on maintenance and repair based on the accumulated experiences to obtain useful insights on bridge management.
