FROM HEALTH MONITORING TO PERFORMANCE RATING OF HIGHWAY BRIDGES: A REVIEW AND AN INTEGRATED APPROACH

Concrete bridges are an essential part of a highway link. The conditions and performance of these highway bridges are mainly monitored by periodic visual inspection and some simple non-destructive tests. These inspection schemes cannot reflect the actual condition of the bridge, let along provide preventive maintenance advices and strategies. Structural health monitoring (SHM) has recently emerged as an attractive means for providing a real-time condition assessment and performance rating for the bridge. In this paper, an attempt to develop a performance oriented SHM system for highway reinforced concrete bridges is presented. A review on performance of reinforced concrete bridges during their life span reveals two important issues that require assistance from the SHM system: the load carrying capacity assessment and the extent and rate of deterioration. As compared to the visual inspection, a well-conceptualized SHM system can quantitatively assess the load carrying capacity and the deterioration of these highway bridges.
