General Framework and Design Procedure of Bridge Life Cycle Design
Life cycle design for bridge takes into account all aspects of construction practice of a bridge, from planning, design, construction and management of service phase to demolishment and recycling of materials and components, which optimizes all alternative solutions based on the performance targets during the entire design life of the bridge. The paper initially reviews the development of research on life cycle of bridges, with emphasis on life cycle design process for bridges. Based on the previous researches, the concept of bridge life cycle design is definitely given in the paper. Starting from owners, social and users needs and requirements, the paper analyzes main contents of bridge life cycle design which need to be carried out for the realization of a good life cycle quality of a bridge and presents that it comprises the processes of service life design, aesthetics design, performance design, environmental and ecological design, inspection, maintenance and repair design, life cycle cost analysis (LCCA). Among them, service life design has a vital influence on the design of other processes, especially on performance design and inspection, maintenance and repair design, and LCCA is the basis for the assessment and the optimization of design alternatives and other design processes. After analyzing the tasks and design methods of six processes, a general framework and a design procedure of bridge life cycle design are presented to provide the guides for the design of new bridges and the assessment and management of existing bridges.
