RESPONSE OF THE REINFORCED CONCRETE STRUCTURES TO BLAST LOADING ORIGINALLY DESIGNED ACCORDING TO NBCC 2005 SEISMIC LOADING

The securities situation around the world is deteriorating, which increased the chances of the terrorist attacks on embassies, commercial, industrial and, other important structures. This warrants engineers to design new structures with high blast load resistant. The blast load is normally high impulse load, which create high local stresses in the members near the blast location. The magnitude of impulse loading due to blast on the structure depends upon amount and type of TNT and its distance from structure. Generally, the blast loads causes local failure of columns, which may lead to progressive collapse of the structure.Analytical investigation has been carried out on the structures originally designed for various level of earthquake loading as per National Building Code of Canada (NBCC 2005) to study the behavior of the structure under blast load. This research will increase our comfort level to know that how much inherited resistance to blast loading exist in structures designed for seismic loads and will exclude the structures from blast load threat in certain geographical locations of the world. It is evident from results that the structures located in high seismic area and designed as per NBCC 2005, have adequate blast load resistance as compared to the structures designed for only gravity loading. In the past few decades, the earthquake effect on reinforced concrete structure has become important issue, whereas in the recent time after the terrorist attacks on embassies, commercial building and industrial facilities, considerable emphasis has been given to the blast loading beside the earthquake.
